Question Time…
Dickins spoke to the owner of this beautiful property about the apartment and why she thought it would make the perfect home from home for a visitor to Edinburgh.
Q: Could you tell me a little bit about how you came to own this beautiful property in such a historic Edinburgh building?
A: I grew up and went to school in Edinburgh before leaving for London at 19. My Dad still lives across the Meadows in the Grange and I’ve been an avid Fringe visitor since leaving 30 years ago. I haven’t missed a year! When my sons became teenagers I started renting flats during the Fringe rather than invading my Dad and in 2012, I went to a viewing of the show flat at Quartermile’s latest building and put down a deposit that day!
Q: Why did you decide to buy a property in the Quartermile development?
A: I’d always wanted to buy a flat in my home town and had watched this particular development grow with interest. It overlooks my primary school and is a short walk from the house I grew up in. The location is incredible for the Fringe and commuting from London…I often walk to Waverly to get the train home again.
Q: What is your favourite feature of the flat?
A: My favourite part of the flat is the mezzanine. It just has a great perspective of the flat and a peaceful extra space, which is a luxury.
Q: There are some beautiful furnishings in the flat. Could tell us about some of these pieces, and any of your favourite interior shops in Edinburgh.
A: I bought the desk and chair from Moleta Munro in Edinburgh – I love their pieces and would have more, if budget had allowed! I also love Soren and Studio One in Morningside – where I bought the large lamp and side table – and have recently ordered a sculptural coat stand from them.
The shutters were the first thing I bought to provide privacy and a contemporary window dressing. I have also just commissioned some window seats for both bedrooms which will be covered in tweed from Anta on George St. I wanted to create a modern Scottish feel. A big space with colours that reflect Scotland without going ‘tartan’.
