This week we’re delighted to introduce you to a new series in our blog, all about the places in Edinburgh that we love to eat in, play in and stay in. Our first featured area will be Stockbridge – one of our all-time favourite Edinburgh hideaways.
Stockbridge is like a village all of its own – right in the middle of the city – and is home to some of Edinburgh’s best small businesses. You’ll find endless rows of beautiful streets and some of the city’s most enchanting hidden pathways tucked away in this urban gem. It is without a doubt one of our most-loved places in Edinburgh to explore.

With a wealth of independent grocers, fishmongers, cheese specialists, bakeries, butchers and more, you’ll have everything you need right on your doorstep. And for those who’d rather dine out, Stockbridge has some fantastic restaurants and pubs, like The Scran and Scallie, Hector’s, and Bell’s Diner, among many others.

Walk along the Water of Leith
It may seem the obvious choice but when it comes to exploring Stockbridge on foot, there is no place more beautiful than the Water of Leith. Walking along the river, you’ll find it hard to believe you’re in the middle of a big city. With the sounds of the water trickling by and the surrounding trees blowing in the breeze, you’ll soon be transported to the countryside. It takes around 15-20 minutes to walk from the Dean Village to Stockbridge, with landmarks like St Bernard’s Well captivating you along the way. There are a few benches placed along the path that will offer you the opportunity to relax and clear your mind. Once you’ve reached Stockbridge, you can escape to The Pastry Selection for a hot drink and one of their decadent cakes.

A visit to the Stockbridge Market
Stockbridge has everything from gastropubs to cosy coffee shops, so choosing just one place is almost impossible. Instead, why not sample everything under one “roof”? The Stockbridge market takes place year-round, every Sunday from 10am-5pm in the Jubilee Gardens on Saunders Street. Dozens of traders and artisan producers visit every weekend, some from the surrounding Stockbridge shops and some from miles outside the city. With everything from gourmet marshmallows and vegan wine to Japanese street food and even handmade dog treats, Stockbridge Market is a place where the whole family can sample the best in local food.
