Dickins Top 5: TV Shows Filmed in Edinburgh
Anyone who has spent some time in Edinburgh will agree that it’s not surprising that the city has been chosen as the backdrop for various TV shows. The striking contrast of Edinburgh’s Old and New Town provide a plethora of options for any genre of TV show. The city’s Old Town boasts striking scenery which is sure to inject a considerable dose of mystery and drama, whereas Edinburgh’s elegant Georgian New Town is timeless and classic. It’s always fun to spot a familiar place in a TV show or movie, so whether you currently live in Edinburgh or have only briefly visited the city, we’re sure you’ll enjoy these 5 TV shows filmed in Edinburgh!
1) North & South
Set against the backdrop of Victorian England’s industrial north, Elizabeth Gaskell’s classic follows the fortunes of Margaret Hale, one of 19th century literature’s most original heroines. Despite the novel being set in England, the BBC’s 2004 adaptation was mostly filmed in Edinburgh! The Hales family home was filmed on St Stephen Street, Margaret’s morning walk took her up Calton Hill (which was transformed into a graveyard for the show), and charming William Street in Edinburgh’s West End served as Milton High Street. Keep your eyes peeled because there are plenty more Edinburgh locations to spot!
2) Rebus
Over the years, the name Rebus has become synonymous with Edinburgh. The British TV show is based on Ian Rankin’s ever-popular novels. Naturally, the TV show is both set and filmed in Edinburgh and throughout the various seasons, the Inspector’s cases take him to different parts of the city. A few locations to look out for include Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh Zoo, Central Library, and Rebus’s favoured bar, the Oxford Bar, was filmed in Nobles Bar in Leith!
3) Outlander
To say that Outlander has grown in popularity over the years is an understatement! The hit British-American TV drama series is based on Diana Gabaldon’s thrilling romantic adventure that transcends history and has captured the hearts of many. However, it wasn’t until season 3 that Edinburgh was given a staring role in the show. Be sure to keep an eye out for the ruined medieval Craigmillar Castle, the cobbled Bakehouse Close within the Old Town, and the historic and grand Signet Library.
4) The Secret Agent
Despite being set in London, the majority of the BBC’s latest adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s novel The Secret Agent was filmed in Edinburgh – most likely due to the city’s great period locations. Be on the look out for the bustling Soho alley outside Verloc’s shop, which was actually filmed in Thistle Street. Hopetoun House served as both Lady Blackwood’s residence and Greenwich Park, plus Bakehouse Close was used as the location for Winnie’s mother Jessie’s house.
5) Case Histories
Case Histories is a British crime drama based on the Kate Atkinson’s well-loved novels of the same name, which follows investigator Jackson Brodie as he attempts to unravel disparate case histories in modern-day Edinburgh! The two seasons were both set and filmed in Edinburgh so there are a plethora of places to spot. Be on the look out for, India Buildings, Calton Hill, Edinburgh Sheriff Court, Waverley Court, Princes Street Gardens and Arthur’s Seat which is a favourite jogging route for Brodie.
