The Devil’s Advocate

Hidden down a narrow close in the Old Town, this bar used to be a Victorian pump house. It has since been transformed into what is arguably one of the city’s coolest and trendiest hangouts. The bar looks so inviting that you’ll struggle to walk past it and it’s the place to be if you’ve got whisky on your mind – they’ve got over 300 bottles to choose from! Or perhaps you just fancy an exceptional cocktail made by one of their award-winning bartenders. And if it’s food you’re after, make sure to book a table on the mezzanine level.

Our favourite tipple:
With such skilled and friendly staff to hand, we can only recommend you ask the bartender to decide for you.

The Sheep Heid Inn

You will have to venture a bit outside the city centre for this one but we assure you it’s worth the journey. This charming pub is actually situated in Duddingston Village near Arthur’s Seat so it’s the perfect place for a rewarding post-walk or climb drink or meal. Established in 1360, The Heid might very well be the oldest pub in Edinburgh – or even Scotland. This place is all about fireplaces, leather armchairs and bookshelves. Oh, and did we mention the skittle alley? It’s historical, cosy, fun and you won’t want to leave. When she was alive The Queen was a customer here!

Our favourite tipple:
How about a craft beer from Mexico? The Modelo Especial is a fresh, clean and citrusy lager.

Bramble-bar-Edinburgh

Bramble Bar

Hidden away in a Queen Street basement, you might struggle to find this cocktail bar, but if you do it it’s definitely worth a visit – it’s been named one of the world’s top 20 bars. The Bramble cocktails are to die for and are served by the most charming and polite barmen. Slip your shoes off and sink into one of the cosy cushioned coves – it’s the perfect place to escape the city (in the heart of the city!) or for a romantic drink or two and one of the cosiest cocktail bars in town.

Our favourite tipple:
The Rheingold Express. It’s a heavenly mix of Bols Genever, cardamom, vanilla, lemon and crème de cacao. Yum!

The Canny Man’s

You could probably spend a whole day inspecting all the nooks and crannies, memorabilia and odd artefacts inside this historic pub in Morningside. Established in 1871, Canny Man’s has become a true Edinburgh institution – and we think this half museum/half pub should be on every tourist’s list of attractions to visit. Just remember to bring cash because credit cards are not accepted.

Our favourite tipple:
It’s got to be their famous Bloody Mary. They’re so good that they were mentioned on the BBC TV show Saturday Kitchen.

Under the Stairs

This is another hidden gem we love. The bar and restaurant is situated in the popular Grassmarket area where you might find yourself if you’re visiting the city. Full of cosy corners where you can enjoy seasonally inspired cocktails and locally sourced food, Under the Stairs is ideal for a break in between sightseeing. It’s the perfect place to escape the chilly Edinburgh winter nights.

Our favourite tipple:
A warming glass of fine red wine from Bulgaria.
