Fish Wild: The Plaice to Fish in Scotland
As one of the top fishing destinations in the world, Scotland’s lochs and rivers are in high demand. Whether it’s freshwater fishing or sea angling that you’re interested in, there are plenty of fishing spots across the country, and there is no one that knows them better than owner of Fish Wild, Fin Wilson.
Dickins spoke to Fin about all things fishy…
What was the inspiration for Fish Wild?
I’ve spent my life fishing for wild trout, sea trout, salmon and grayling in amazing locations all around Scotland. I realised there was an opportunity to offer a guiding/instruction service for anyone keen to fish for wild fish in stunning scenery. I set up Fish Wild 12 years ago and since then have welcomed people from all over the world and had a lot of fun, both teaching them how to fish and improving their skills or, in the case of accomplished anglers, providing them with a fast track to great fishing.
What is so special about the area?
I’m based on the Tweed in the Scottish Borders and apart from the incredible scenery and rich history of the area, generally, the Tweed is one of the most prolific salmon rivers in Europe. In addition, it has world class brown trout, sea trout and grayling fishing so there are great options for visiting anglers – pretty much the whole year round!
Why might Scotland appeal to people as a holiday fishing destination?
For one thing, Scotland is considered by many to be the spiritual home of fly-fishing, so the history and tradition of the sport here is pretty special. Spey casting began here, for example. There are also limitless possibilities for fly-fishing, with countless rivers and lochs all over the country. Although Fish Wild is based in the Borders, I fish and guide all over Scotland and we are spoiled for choice. The lowland rivers like the Tweed, Annan and Clyde all offer fabulous sport, while the likes of Tay, Spey and Dee have sensational scenery. The Highlands and Islands have endless trout and salmon fishing.
What are the chances of catching a salmon or other fish?
With salmon fishing, there are no guarantees as there are so many variables – the height of the river being one of the most vital elements. Even if the river in question is stuffed full of fish, they might not be in a particularly taking mood! Given good conditions though, there is always a decent chance of success and we’ve been lucky enough to help many anglers catch their first salmon over the years. When it works, there’s nothing better!
For sea trout, also a migratory fish, prospects are also very dependent on conditions and time of year. However, for trout and grayling, the chances of catching are generally much higher – although success can never be 100 per cent assured with wild fish, we’re always pretty confident we’ll get clients into some good sport.
How long does the day last?
As long as our clients want – there’s nothing worse than having a time limit when you’re fishing – but for the less committed/obsessed, half days or even just a couple of hours on the water, (or casting instruction), are all possible.
Can I bring my own fishing equipment?
Of course, but Fish Wild can supply everything you’ll need for a day on the water. I’m a member of the Greys Pro Team and have plenty of great equipment which I supply as part of the deal.
Can we keep the fish we catch?
Potentially, although catch and release is generally encouraged. It’s the law that all spring salmon, hen salmon or coloured salmon (hen or cock) should be returned safely to the water and some rivers are complete catch and release now. However, on the rivers that allow, taking a clean cock fish (apart from in the Spring) for the table is perfectly acceptable, as is taking the odd trout from the lochs to eat. Both are delicious.
Can I bring a friend to watch me fish?
Absolutely, and if lunch or food of any kind is required then Fish Wild’s sister company Wild Dining can cater to all requirements.
