Dickins Spends Five Minutes With The Ingleby Gallery’s Richard Ingleby!

Founded in 1998, Ingleby Gallery maintains an ambitious program of exhibitions and off-site projects by established and emerging artists. Over the past 17 years, it has secured a reputation as one of the country’s leading private galleries, renowned for the quality of its exhibitions and publications. Dickins spent five minutes with Richard Ingleby to find out more about the summer programme, his love for the Edinburgh Festival and his favourite spots in Edinburgh!

Richard Ingleby speaks to Dickins about the Ingleby Gallery and Edinburgh Festivals!

Richard Ingleby tells us all about the summer exhibition!

1) Tell us about your summer exhibition?

Richard: It is the latest instalment of Charles Avery’s on-going project The Islanders – an invitation to enter the weirdly beautiful and sometimes oddly familiar world that Avery has created over the past ten years as a kind of fictional parallel to life here on earth. The exhibition is titled The People and Things of Onomatopoeia – referring to the port that stands as the entry point to the island – and presents exactly what the title suggests: drawings, objects and artefacts that have arrived from that world into this.

 

Richard: It requires a small leap of imaginative faith on the part of the viewer but it is a leap that is richly rewarded. The really great thing about this body of work is that it shows just how deep and textured Avery’s world has become.

2) What does the Edinburgh Festival mean to you?

Richard: I love it, though I’m permanently late. For everything. The human sea that fills the streets always seems to be going in the opposite direction. Apart from that, and late nights, and drinking too much, and a slight sense of apprehension about not having got tickets for the really amazing show that everyone is talking about… it is also the time of year that we get to see all sorts of people in the gallery that we spend the other eleven months of the year tracking down at art fairs around the world. It’s a great time to be in the city, despite the chaos.

3) Do you have any regular Edinburgh haunts or hangouts?

Richard: My favourite, and most regular, is Arthur’s Seat with my dogs, especially in the early morning when there’s no one there. But also lots of other places depending on what’s required… Artisan Roast for a cup of coffee, Dave Ramsden’s the Dogs for most other things. If we’re up-scaling a bit then Timberyard or the Honours are both reliably reliable and hard to beat. And home of course, I like cooking for family and friends and I’m a regular at Eddie’s Seafood Market, without a doubt the best fish shop in town.
